Meredith 1 BEC 2 Match Report SD

Both teams went into the game unbeaten in their first two games. A top two in the table clash which was tight and tense from start to finish. Meredith started quickest putting early pressure on BEC which was rewarded when Joel Harding scored (with his brand new boots- photo) within the first 5 minutes. For much of the first half Meredith soaked up a lot of pressure but Nathan Faulkner, goalkeeper, was not troubled only being called to make the occasional save as the defence dealt with each attack comfortably. 1-0 at half time.

Meredith came out a lot stronger and more focused second half but were soon to be slowed down when BEC were awarded a penalty as Darius Bristow was adjudged to have brought down an opposing player. The Meredith players and bench were not happy with this decision as they felt the ball was played, but the referees decision stood and the penalty was converted, 1-1.

This seemed to spur Meredith on as for much of the second half they put the BEC defense under pressure. Early on two very clear opportunities were spurned, chances they would rue. During a 5 minute attacking spell Meredith hit the post four times, the bar twice and the BEC keeper pulled off a worldy of a save. The best opportunity was a header from Harding which looked to be going in, and had the player and team celebrating, only to see it hit the woodwork.

BEC were very unlucky not to be awarded a second penalty when Scott Bambrick clearly brought down their striker in the box with only a corner given by the referee.

The game looked to be heading for a draw but BEC won a series of throwings and a corner in the last minutes. With only seconds on the clock BEC launched a final throw into the Meredith penalty area, the throw was met by the head of the defending Kyle Aubrey for him only to see it hit the back of his own net! He was devastated, as were the whole of the Meredith team. For BEC it was pure joy as they stole a late victory taking them clear top of the league.
